Happiness Is . . . learning how to "Pump" yourself on the swing

Once upon a time I was a little kid who learned that the other kids didn't need to get pushed on the swing anymore because they knew how to pump themselves.

My drive to learn this new skill motivated me. I knew I could do it, I just needed to work hard and not give up.

I start pumping my legs–stretching them forward then drawing them up underneath me. Leaning backwards then forwards.

It was hard coordinating my movements and get a rhythm. Then the moment came when I realized I was able to propel myself higher and higher.

I felt the excitement and wonder of flying through the air pumping all by myself.

What a wonderful feeling to sit in the swing, soaring, my feet touching the sky!

In that moment, I felt pure happiness. I know this is how my Honey Bunny felt today.

Does this bring back any memories for you?

Happiness is….Going to the Drive-In

When I was a little girl, there were several drive-ins to choose from.  Actually we had one right in town called the Sunset Drive-In. It was just on the outskirts of town but only took us ten minutes to get to.

The town has grown and amalgamated with two other towns to become the City of Cambridge.
The Sunset is long gone and the car lot that replaced it isn’t even near the outskirts.

Nowadays the closest drive-in is the Mustang in a completely different city and it takes us up to thirty minutes to get there.

We have to leave our place by seven thirty to get a good spot right up in the front and close to the middle of the row.

I remember bringing Frisbees and baseball mitts with balls to play up front in the grassy area right in front of the huge screen. There were lots of other kids running around in their pajamas. The parents stayed in their cars worry free.

Now, my granddaughters also play up front in the grass but we keep a constant eye on them with strict instructions to stay within sight.

Oh, that reminds me of something. Remember when drive-ins had those speakers mounted on a concrete pole between the cars? And we had to put that weird shaped speaker on the window?

Well, quite a few years ago, I took my kids to the drive-in expecting speakers. Guess what? They don’t use those anymore. Instead you have to tune into a radio station to hear the movie.

And you know what else? It just happened that the radio in my car was not working. We had to strain our ears to hear the show from the other car radios.

That was okay, it was a kids show and I just mindlessly watched my kids enjoy the whole drive-in experience because you know it’s just fun sitting outside on lawn chairs, snuggling up with blankets and eating extra buttered popcorn with pop. Pop was a treat in itself.

So I carried on the tradition with my daughters and now with my granddaughters.

Yes they have ants in their pants and they can’t make up their minds if they want to sit inside or outside. Yes they climb all over me in the front seat and eat too much junk food. And yes they get overtired by the end of the first movie. But that’s okay. They have a great time and that’s what it’s all about.

Gratitude Journal Week Two: When Life Gets Sour Sweeten it With Gratitude

I honestly believe in the power of keeping a gratitude journal. It is a simple habit and it only takes a few minutes a day.

It is the key to a happier life.

Gratitude Journal Week Two

  1. I am grateful to Beth and James for finding us a place to live. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
  2. I am extremely grateful for having Honey Bunny in my life because she gives me reason to keep moving when I am down, she is the sunshine in my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
  3. I am grateful for having a mattress to sleep on.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.
  4. I am grateful for all the moments that get me through the day. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
  5. I am grateful to my Mom for loving me unconditionally and always being on my side. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Never under estimate the power of your gratitude journal. It is one of the best tools to give you an attitude for gratitude. And subsequently bring you sustainable happiness. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
